A note from Rod…
Do
you know Youth who are eager for a growing experience in Christ? How about a few who have expressed an
interest in knowing more about Him?
Chrysalis is designed for young people in high school and beyond who are
seeking to know more about Jesus or already have a vital relationship with
Him. The Girls’ Flight last August was
rescheduled because no one stepped up to sponsor these young
ladies! Amazing, isn’t it? We now have two Flights scheduled in
January. CATERPILLARS are needed for
both. Please consider sponsoring this January. Deadline is Dec. 18. Don't wait till the last minute to send
in your application. It is a chance of a lifetime to be involved with the youth
of our community!

President’s Letter
In this Rooster Booster you will find the nominations for the new class of Board of Directors in 2004-2006. Please take time to vote on these important leadership positions for our community. These people have willing offered to fill the vacant seats left by the outgoing Board Members. They need your support and your prayers as they head into 2004 and the many changes ahead for our community. MANY thanks to the outgoing members of the Board… Jonathan Enz, Gayle Wright, and Linda Wagar… as well as those who filled in last-minute vacancies. Some of these people are even running again!
When I accepted nomination for the Board of Directors of the Oregon Trails Walk to Emmaus several years ago I had no clue what was in store for me. I knew that I had been around for quite awhile and had seen several big changes in our community. I felt that my experience as well as my desire to help strengthen our community would be helpful as a Board Member. I looked forward to the opportunity to work with people that I admire and respect. I have not been disappointed. It has been an interesting four years… two as President. I have witnessed the impact we have as a community because we believe God uses the Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis programs. We may have struggles, but after 20 years (YES, October marks our 20th anniversary!),
our community is still strong and vital. We have learned to work together.
In most organizations, the leadership relies heavily on volunteers. In our OTWTE and Chrysalis community we rely TOTALLY on volunteers. Not one person is paid to do paperwork, networking, budgeting, communicating, training, or computer programming. Include in that the hundreds of people who plan, shop, create, prepare, sponsor, and give up valuable time for the Walk and Chrysalis weekends as well as Fourth Day activities. Together we cut and paste, chop and stir, laugh and cry, worship… and learn more about how we, as leaders in Christ, can make a difference in our world today.
In order for us to continue this work, we need many hands to do many administrative jobs. Several people who have held positions for YEARS are finding the need to move into other areas. These positions are not expendable. To remain strong, we must continue to train and fill these roles. Gayle Wright has faithfully held the job of Treasurer for many years and must now pass the job to another. Patti Risdal has collected Community Agape for more years than we can count but would like to give this privilege to another. Our Rooster Booster has seen several Editors. We could use someone who has a desire to use their communication skills to strengthen ours in this community. We also need help in many areas of Chrysalis and Fourth Day activities. In some positions we need several people to help share the work rather than one person shouldering the whole job. When it comes time for some volunteers to move on… there will be others ready to accept the workload. Giving our volunteers a time of rest is as important as our service. You will receive the training, guidance and support you need to complete these tasks. Do you hear His voice? Are you WILLING?
If you are, remember… many hands will join yours. Our community is strong because we understand the importance of those who give their time willingly so others can continue to be renewed on the Walk to Emmaus. I am glad I said ‘yes’. Are YOU willing?
A fellow servant in Christ, Ron Wagar, President 360-254-8818; rwagar(at)pacifier.com

From the President-Elect
We NEED your application to
Work! The OTWTE bylaws place
responsibility for conducting Walks/Chrysalis’ on the shoulders of the Board of
Directors… elected to serve in that fashion.
We need your help. When the
Board recruits Lay and Spiritual Directors to head up a Walk or Flight, those
Directors need names to choose from to populate the Inn, Cocoon & BG
teams. Each event must have a complete
team to fulfill all the tasks on a weekend.
If you can work a Walk/Chrysalis any time in the next year or two,
please fill out an application and mail it to the OTWTE mailbox. You’ll find the applications at www.otwte.com. If you need one mailed to you, call Linda
Wagar, 360-254-8818. Please mail them to
the address at the bottom of the application.
Please notice the new suggested donation amount. If you are a clergy and can only work one
Walk/Chrysalis a year in a specific season- please indicate that on the
application. The Team Selection
committee will hold that app open until you indicate otherwise. We need to hear
from you soon.
In
addition, could your church host a Walk/Chrysalis? Drop me a note through the OTWTE mailbox, call or email me with
the information or any questions you may have.
We will begin the process of assessing the size and availability of your
church and start the process rolling!

To
All Servants of the Lord! Praise God, all the teams
are in place at this time and I pray that every one stays healthy. Rick and I are busy getting everything
together and praying that we haven't missed anything. Thank everyone that has so willingly stepped
forward to be on the team and God Bless you. In His Name,

Women’s Walk #57 “The Potter’s Hand” Nov. 6-9, 2003 Vancouver First UMC
What a
tremendous blessing - to be called and crafted into God's perfect plan.
Our Potter is molding the team for the Fall Walk according to His
purpose. We have a wonderful team in place but still need someone to
chair Sunday Love. Please pray for the Pilgrims, we will have a full
Inn. We're so excited to see what God has planned to encourage and impact
all our lives. Please contact either of us if you have any questions or
concerns. Held in the Potter's Hand, Mary and Barb

Girl’s
Chrysalis #19 “You’re All I Want” Jan. 8-11, 2004 Salmon Creek UMC
What’s the saying
about the best laid plans…? The Girl’s
Flight planned for August 2003 has been rescheduled for January 8-11, 2004 (Editor’s Note: Sponsors… we need CATERPILLARS!). God has been truly watching
over the preparations for this Flight.
The majority of the team members who were ready to serve in August are
ready and willing to be there in January.
Now all we need are Caterpillars!
It would be great to have a lot of college-age gals there in addition to
the high-schoolers. If you feel God is
placing some young woman’s name on your heart, then I pray that you will
consider sponsoring her. Chrysalis is a
great way to show the youth how wonderful God’s love is and to meet new friends
in Christ. I still have a few slots
open for new and experienced youth and adult workers. Please contact me ASAP via email or phone if you are interested
in working.

#58 “I Can Move Mountains” February 19 – 22, 2004 Tigard First UMC
Faith! It’s amazing what God will
do with our faith. As Phil and I start
preparing for Walk 58, God has provided us with a great Core Team and an
outstanding theme and song about Faith.
We look forward to what God has in store for the Walk and where He will
lead us. I have one request for the
community, please pray for Walk 57 that God will bless the
Pilgrims & Team. Pray that Walk 58 will continue to be blessed and that any
mountain that is in our way will be removed. In His Service, Jim Kendoll– Lay Director 360-835-2409 jkendoll(at)comcast.net

# 59 "His Love Endures Forever" October, 2004 Vancouver 1st UMC.
Sing Praise as God continues to bless us with his Love and
Grace. What a blessing it is to have been chosen to lead a new group of
pilgrims to a closer relationship with their Lord. This is God's Walk, and with
the prayers and support of many, I look forward to carrying out God's plan for
this weekend, for He is Good and He is above all Things.

From the
Treasurer:
Hi everyone
.... I am happy to report that
we have $13,622.93 in the OTWTE accounts.
This gives us a good cushion to work with -- we can easily advance
monies for the kitchen teams, etc. while the walk fees are still coming
in. So, thanks to each of you for your
support to OTWTE.
Thanks
to all of you who so generously contributed toward the new trailer. Also, a very special thanks to each of you
who send checks along on a regular basis – we appreciate your faithfulness
and steadfastness toward Emmaus. Thanks to all of you for the little
notes that are enclosed with your checks - "We so appreciate getting the
Rooster Booster - just wanted to help with postage", etc. Thanks for sending those "surprise"
contributions along -- I want you to know that they are noticed and greatly
appreciated!
Here's
some regular treasurer requests --
--- Please remember to indicate on the memo line of your check what your donation is for - i.e. "Women's #57". Your checks get separated from your application -- so this way we can keep track of where each of the checks came from.
--- Try to get your requests for
reimbursement in as soon as you can after a walk or flight. This helps us have an accurate look at the
true expenses at the next board meeting following a weekend. You will find a form for reimbursement at
WWW.OTWTE.COM.
--- Those of you requesting advances --
please don't wait until the last minute -- we want to get the funds to you in a
timely manner. (I might be out of town
). SO - thanks to each of you
.................. feel free to call me
if there is anything I can do to help.

From the Board of Directors
The year 2004 finds us heading in a new direction. With the commitment from the Board to follow the Model as provided by the Upper Room, and to honor our written agreement with them, we have begun to implement some changes beginning January, 2004. They are outlined below.
Beginning with the Winter Walks, we will begin using a different format for the communion service on Saturday afternoon. The Model outlines a service called “Dying Moments Communion”. It has a similar emphasis to the nailing of Obstacles we do during Healing Service. With this service will also come a few changes to the schedule on Saturday.
We will also be reviewing our policies regarding Speakers and Backups. It is the intention of the Upper Room that these individuals would be WELL prepared beforehand by meeting several times and giving their talk before the weekend arrives. We will be implementing this practice in stages throughout the year. We will also be reviewing our practice of using silent Table Leaders. Upper Room asks that a Table Leader be recognized from the beginning of the Walk rather than revealed throughout the weekend.
Beginning in the Fall of 2003, we will encourage the Sponsors to ask their Pilgrims to leave their watches at home. Instead of requiring the Pilgrims to turn over their watches during the weekend, we will have envelopes available… and the suggestion will be made that watches are put away. We will also discontinue the practice of stealing the bell during the weekend events. Our focus on the weekend is the grace of Jesus and how He would like us to conduct our lives. It is also our hope that we would redirect our efforts to strengthen the role of the Lay Director rather than undermining leadership. By eliminating the bell stealing, we hope to accomplish these tasks.
This coming year we will make the move away from the ‘Way of the Cross’ on Friday night. Instead we will use a service called the Emmaus Road Experience created specifically for the Walk to Emmaus. This, like the Way of the Cross, is a time for reflection.
In addition, the Board has changed its policy on funding the Walks and Flights. No longer are you required to send in an application fee when you are applying for a Walk or Chrysalis. Instead, there is a suggested donation for all participants… Team, Pilgrims, and Caterpillars alike… of $30.00. This donation is non-refundable for those not chosen for a team or the individual who may have to cancel. Our hope is that our community, as a whole, would CONTINUE to support the costs of our events rather than just the participants. The estimated cost per person is over $50.00 and it is our prayer that the funds would continue to be available beforehand to cover expenses that are incurred by Team Leaders.
If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to the Board President or the President-Elect.
(See President/ President-Elect’s letter for contact
information). As changes are
considered, we ask for your prayers and your patience during the process. We will continue to update you as the year
progresses and look forward to your continued faithfulness. With Thanks, The Board of Directors
