President’s Letter

As the community prepares for the Walks in October and November, please pray for all involved. Pray for the Pilgrims. Pray for the Lay Directors and the core teams, the speakers and backups, the team members in the Inn and in the Background and all involved attending the walks. Sometime during each walk weekend, stop and take a few minutes to pray.  Thank you in advance.

Here is the latest OTWTE community business:  Remember to vote for board members on the included ballot. We will announce the new members in the January RB. Also, there is an article regarding replacing the trailer. Due to scheduling conflicts it was difficult to have a quorum of the board during the summer. Currently, two/thirds of the entire board is required for a quorum. It was discussed at the September board meeting to lower that requirement to 51%. Our by-laws require notification of the entire community to make this change. At the November meeting we will be voting on this issue. If you would like to comment please contact a board member or you are welcome to attend the board meeting.                A fellow servant in Christ, Ron Wagar, 360-254-8818; rwagar(at)pacifier.com

Sponsorship: In the Day Four booklet, found in your Fourth Day packet received during your walk, chapter 8 talks about Being a Good Sponsor. “The strength of any Emmaus community is a direct result of that community’s recruiting practices.”. And later, “Emmaus is designed to spiritually renew church members who, in turn, can Christianize their environments.”. Many times, The Upper Room Walk to Emmaus specifically states Emmaus pilgrims are to be active church members. They stress the importance of church member renewal through the Walk to Emmaus movement.  In this context a church member is anyone who attends and participates in the church’s activities, whether they have or have not joined the membership roles of the church. The Day Four booklet also emphasizes the importance of sponsorship in the relationship with the pilgrim before, during and after the Walk weekend. The personal contact you have with your pilgrim is important. Obviously people we meet and talk with each week in church are the most likely people to be sponsored.  As a refresher here are the 10 suggested steps when you find a prospective pilgrim. 1. Pray  2. Make an Appointment.  3. The invitation.   4.  The Commitment.  5. Continuing preparation.   6. Weekend Responsibilities.   7. Remember Day Four.   8. Back to the church.  9. Understand Emmaus.  10. Help the pilgrim to Sponsor.  For more details see the Day Four booklet and talk with your sponsor. There is a separate booklet from the Upper Room called Sponsorship which can help as well.
