It has been said that your TALENT determines WHAT you can do, your MOTIVATION
Determines how much you are WILLING to do; but it is your ATTITUDE that determines HOW WELL you do it. Interesting! Would you reread that first sentence and in place of “talent”, “motivation” and “attitude”, insert (in sequence) “gifts”, “submission” and “obedience”. The first represents being responsibly world-like, while the latter suggests being faithfully Christ-like.
The fruits of our proper attitudes and our commitment to serve the Lord come about not so much by exhausting, sacrificing hard work, but by the commitment and unconditional
Love in our hearts for Him who saves and sustains us.
You see we often can’t choose our circumstances or situations, but we CAN choose an attitude of obedience and submission in our faith; THAT determines whether we realize our accepted God-directed goals.
We do have authority over non-participation because of “preoccupations” and, yes, even over “fears” of active involvement or past disappointments. We can pray them away because our focus is ON, and our strength is FROM, Jesus Christ and from one-another in the Body of Christ. And so it is within the majority of the loving Emmaus community. Let us give praise to Him who has provided untold blessings to thousands experiencing and “working” past Walks.
In your service and in His grip,
On behalf of your loving board, Don Bodine

Have you ever wondered what it takes to lead a Kitchen Team when the most people you have cooked for was 15 for Thanksgiving? Or to be a speaker when your knees knock just thinking about teaching a Sunday School class? Or to be on a Music Team when you only know a few chords or can’t play a guitar at all? And what does a love team do really?
We are pleased to offer you the opportunity for training in these and many more areas: from ChaCha to Clergy, Decorations to Agape. This is open to those who are “curious” as well as people who would like to train for an upcoming event. You will find that you don’t need to be a professional speaker, musician or artist to serve on a team … just an obedient heart to our Lord Jesus. The training will also include Sponsorship, Fourth Day/Next Steps activities and information you can take with you to start your own Reunion groups or Gatherings.
The purpose statement for the Oregon Trails Walk To Emmaus says that our focus is not on ourselves, but on the local church. Our objective is to inspire, challenge, and equip local church members for Christian Action in their homes, churches, places of work and communities. The Walk to Emmaus/Chrysalis is more than a 3-day event. It is the training necessary to be ready for the weekend and sills we come away with in order to effectively reach others for Christ in our homes, churches, places of work and communities.
Come joins us for a wonderful time of fellowship, worship and training as we share with each other what we have learned since Walk #1 in 1983.

OTWTE board meetings are GENERALLY held on the first Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 12-noon. The next meeting has been changed to the second Saturday, February 12, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Lake Oswego. The following board meeting will be held on March 4. Agenda items and committee reports are due one week prior to each board meeting. For further information, contact Don Bodine, 503-623-8086, e-mail: donbodine(at)juno.com.
Have you checked our new web site? It’s www.otwte.com (not to be confused with otwe.com, the old out-of-date site). It’s still in the “building stage,” but do take a look. You can download Walk and Chrysalis applications. Soon we hope to have the Rooster Booster available. Thanks to Carl Sullivan for all his hard work in developing the web site.
July seems like it is far in the future and, of course, it is; but now is the time when the Lay Director and the Vice-Director are working. We are working and God is working for us. If you love the Lord; if you believe that the Emmaus movement is in God’s will but you wonder if you are able or if you would have good help, please consider Romans 8:28; “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
And if you want some comfort while you consider applying to work a Walk, move ten verses on in the same book. Romans 8:38-39: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Does that somehow suggest that you apply to work Walk # 50?
We have some completed applications but many more are needed for workers in almost every area. If you want to try a new team, get more experience or become eligible for some next step, then apply now. We will not guarantee that every man will get just the position he wants, but after we pray about it, we promise that every man will get just the position "He" wants, as we understand it.
Our theme song “His Grace” by C.E. Smith and was written especially for this Walk. The first three lines fit Emmaus very well:
Thank You for Your loving grace that came to seek and find us.
Thank You for Your saving grace that took our sins away.
Thank You for Your living grace that shares its holiness.
Send your applications via regular mail to Team Selection or via E-mail to Sally Bodine at Sjbodine(at)juno.com right away. But most of all, start on those pilgrim applications, now or real soon! (Editors note: You can download both applications from our web site: www.otwte.com) We look forward to working with you and God working for the good of our combined efforts.
Your Brothers in Christ,
Bob Kenyon, lay director, and Ian Finseth, vice director
With the release of 18 new butterflies, communities all over the Northwest are blessed. We praise God for all that he has done and will do in their next steps.
I would like to offer a special thanks to all that helped in any form before, during, and after the weekend. Your prayers, talents and gifts helped to make our flight with Christ uplifting.
Fly with Christ, Patsy Bixler, Lay Director
Twenty-six young men became Butterflies in the first month of this millenium. I want to thank everyone who helped make it an awesome flight. I also want to thank The Director, Jesus Christ, for calling a great group of people together.
Steve Johnson, Lay Director

In the Walk to Emmaus script, a Cha is described as a very resourceful person. … and they are. Chas keep the Walk on schedule. Chas keep the pilgrims where they need to be and help them along their way. Chas see that the Lay Director and Vice are fully informed and that their directions are carried out. If a team member needs something … they ask a Cha. Chas escort speakers to and from the Inn and see that they are prayed for before and after their talk. Chas are often the “life of the party,” but also, they can often be tired from the burdens (physical, emotional and spiritual) that they bear during a Walk. Chas are very resourceful persons and often the success of a Walk depends upon them. (However, that’s not to say they are any more important than any other team member.)
Christ’s church also needs Chas. As with the Walk, your church and every church is equally dependent upon and always on the look out for “another Cha.” When you and I were commissioned into the Emmaus community, we knelt to receive our Emmaus cross and the clergy said, “Christ is counting on you” to which we all responded, “And I am counting on Christ.” Think about it, “How are you fulfilling your commission?” How is your resourcefulness being used in your church – in your Fourth Day? Your church needs more Chas – someone watching and ready to serve. Your pastor needs Chas. The governing board needs Chas. The Sunday school and youth program need Chas. The choir, ushers, greeters, the office, the custodian, the nursery, the deacons, etc. all need a good Cha or two. The truth is, regardless what team you serve on at the Walk or “in the church” – we are always and all-ways a Cha. We are all very resourceful people – God has gifted us that way and is ready and waiting for us to take our place “on Christ’s team.” Think a bit further … A Cha could probably make a great witness in your office, at your work place, in your neighborhood and among your friends.
A CHA is Christ’s Helper All-ways! And Christ Is Counting On You!
Gloria Gibbs is looking for the banner from the Walk in 1992 for which she was lay director. If you know of its whereabouts, please contact Gloria, 360-695-9017, E-mail: glomo(at)pacifier.com.
On January 25 Pat Jarrard gave her sister, Hazel Lefler, a wonderful gift … one of her kidneys! Here’s the latest report, thanks to Ann Albritton: The doctors said that both
surgeries went well and were pleased with the results. Pat
and Hazel have several weeks of recovery ahead of them, so please continue to
keep them in your prayers plus the family members who are looking after them.
Hazel is scheduled to stay at Pat’s for a couple of weeks and then go to her
niece’s home in Salem. Hazel and Pat’s addresses are: Hazel Lefler, 293
Broadmore Avenue NE, Salem, OR 97301, 503-585-1128, HLefler(at)aol.com; Pat
Jarrard, 21000 NW Quatama, Beaverton, OR 97002, 503-614-9751, BEAVERGEEK(at)aol.com. (Update
for e-mail recipients from Hazel as of 2/1: Many of you have already received
updates on our kidney surgery - but here goes just in case some didn't. It went wonderfully. We were done by early Tuesday afternoon and
back in our room. Pat was up walking
(well, listing to one side) that evening.
I didn't budge till Wednesday. By
Wednesday morning, my blood counts were better than when I was first diagnosed
in 1996 - and they are slowly getting even better.
Pat went to her house
on Saturday and I went there on Sunday afternoon. I had lab work done Monday am and did not
have to be back till Wednesday, so our niece, Juanita, and I came to my house
in Salem after the lab work. Pat and
Dianna came Monday afternoon. Pat and
Dianna went back to Pat's this afternoon (Tuesday) and Juanita and I will go
back in about an hour. I have labs on
Wednesday and Friday and Clinic on Thursday.
Dianna will fly out Saturday morning and then we will come back here for
a couple of days. We will bounce between
the two houses for a couple of weeks.
We are both doing
remarkably well! Pat describes her
condition as feeling like a major pulled muscle. I consider mine to be very painful upon major
position changes and uncomfortable other times.
In any event, it surely is less painful and difficult than I had worked
myself up to expect. All the mighty
prayers were answered - and then some!
I will let you know when I will be home enough to start receiving routine messages again. In the meantime, keep the prayers coming. Love ya all!)
Nikki Bodine, daughter of Don and Sally, studying abroad until April as a history major at the University of Reading in England. She would like to keep in contact with her OTWTE friends. Nikki’s email is nikbodine(at)yahoo.com, and her address is Nicole M. Bodine, Wells Hall, Upper Redlands Road, Reading RG1 5J8, England.
Please remember the congregation of Bethlehem Baptist Church in your prayers as they seek a new pastor. And thank them for opening their facility for OTWTE events.
Laura Neish is asking for prayers for her mom, Roseann Veri, who recently suffered a major heart attack, complicated by diabetic ketoacidosis. Please also pray for her dad,
her two young children being cared for by their grandparents, and the hospital staff that has been working so diligently caring for her mom.
Robin Plumbley is asking for prayers for Mike Hutchinson and his family, International Mission Board missionaries in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. Mike has been arrested for killing a 16-year-old Muslim who jumped (or was pushed) in front of his car. If convicted, he will be hanged immediately. His wife, Lynn, and children (12,10,9) are staying with another missionary family. Please pray for God's intervention.
(An additional prayer
request for e-mail readers: Please add Ron Lewis to the prayer List. He is Dean
Creech's (OTWTE #27) cousin, Ron is in the final stages of cancer. Dean can be reached at deancreec(at)aol.com)
