Questions have surfaced regarding the presence of a Board Representat ive in the Inn during a Walk to Emmaus weekend. Why are "they" doing this? How is this going to work? Don't "they" trust us? Are "we" being "monitored"?
The answers have to do with recommendations from the International Emmaus model and Board accountability. The International Emmaus organization holds each community's Board of Directors accountable for the conduct and quality of Walk to Emmaus weekends. The model provides for a Board Representative to be part of the leadership table located in the back of the "conference room" (Inn). Your Oregon Trails Walk to Emmaus Board has decided to come part way toward the model and at least have a Board Rep sitting in on the activities directly affecting the new Pilgrims.
The International recommendation is t hat a Board Member sit in on each Walk weekend with no other duties or responsibilities but to observe the process. The aim is to identify what works well during the weekend and what doesn't work as well as it could. The Board Rep then consults with the team following the Walk, soliciting ideas and feedback on his or her observations. These thoughts are taken back to the Board for follow-up so that the next set(s) of Walks might be better experiences for the Pilgrims. The Board is taking on this transit ion step at this time because many changes were included in the Fall Walks at Vancouver First UMC. First hand observation is the most effective way to determine if the changes work or need revision.
The International model has the Board Rep in the Inn as the designated liaison with the community Board during the weekend in case the Lay Director or Spiritual Director on the Walk ask for advice. The Board Rep is specifically charged with not stepping in to offer unsolicited advice or comment. Members of the team are trusted to complete their part in the weekend within the scope of the task that each has voluntarily accepted. No one but our Lord, Jesus Christ is "in charge" of the weekend.
As to the monitoring question, the answer is a qualified "yes". The process is being monitored to see how team members and Pilgrims respond. The participants are not being monitored for how well they work within the process. The goal is to provide the best weekend experience we can on the "Emmaus Road", both now and on into the future.
Jay Gregory for the OTWTE Board
This time around I have lots on my mind and no way to express it all. In the last 27 months, since accepting the OTWTE community's trust, I have watched events and issues unfold within the community setting that have little to do with the Walk to Emmaus charter: Build up the Church by ministry to and revitalization of the leaders within the church. As part of the Body of Christ, we are called by God through Grace to a special ministry within Christ's Church. We are not called to police the Pilgrims placed before us by the Holy Spirit at work in the community. Nor are we to judge lest we reject the Grace extended to us.
Grace is always present. But the truth of Grace is that to be received, Grace must be accepted by the receiver. God advances Grace to us, but if we don't receive the offered Grace, we do not benefit from that Gift. We cannot receive Grace if our hands are full of "stuff" - things, issues, and thoughts - "stuff" that separates us from God and our neighbors. Repentance is the process by which we drop the "stuff" and open our hands towards God and the Gift of Grace (some of the things I've learned in my current study "What's so Amazing About Grace").
I am about to do something I feel harms the long-term health of the community - work in the Inn while serving on the board of directors. A month ago, while receiving the report from the Lay Director of the upcoming Men's Walk at a Board meeting, I was offered the chance to take some of the pressure off the leadership team organizing the Walk. I took that opportunity to extend a measure of Grace to my friends and colleagues in the community. I put aside my thoughts on the matter and acted out of Love. I do not hold this up as something special, but as part of the normal Christian response to adverse circumstance as I understand the call. I cannot ask another, as a leader in the community, to do what I have not already done. I also understand better what motivates my brothers and sisters serving on the Board to work while serving the community in that position of leadership. I repent of my "stuff", at least this portion of it, and turn closer to God - my hands hold on to less stuff, so there is more room for Grace.
As we continue to work through the issues that face the community, we all need to reflect on our mission as a community and how we might benefit from the Grace God extends to each and every one in the community. How can we make that Grace visible to the Pilgrims we serve? How can we be agents of Grace with each other? How can we be the Body of Christ to the World? Reflect and pray on these questions.
Elsewhere in this issue, the Editor is printing an explanation of what the Board Representative does and doesn't do while serving in the Inn. Please take the opportunity to read and reflect on that explanation in light of what you have read

URGENT Prayer Request! From John and Kathy Alden ~~~ Kathy Alden was diagnosed with leukemia in March of 04. Since then she has gone through several months in the hospital both in Eugene and Portland OHSU. After a lot of chemotherapy she was given an autologuous stem cell transplant. This is where they harvested her own stem cells and then has them reintroduced after a very heavy chemotherapy treatment. It has been several months since the procedure was done and, although at first successful, it now appears that she is coming out of remission. The last procedure available to her is to find a donor with DNA close enough to hers that she will not reject their stem cells or bone marrow. We have less than 2 months to find a match after she comes out of remission, which appears will happen within the month. In most areas the Red Cross would be the organization to contact to find out how you can get registered with the National Marrow Donor Program. To become a donor involves a little time and the drawing of a little blood to be analyzed. For those individuals in her condition the only hope they have is finding a match. John & Kathy Alden
God has always provided for our needs and has always given us the strength to endure the trials. He loves us so much, even in spite of our weakness and sin, that He continues to give His grace and love to us. I have never been a patient person. He began a work in me 10 years ago to show me the need to wait on Him. I still want things to happen according to my schedule, so I have not learned all my lessons yet. The phrase, "Please be patient with me, God is not finished with me yet" rings so true for my own need to be patient with God as He works through me with the "Power of His Love". I am ready to rise up and soar on eagle’s wings, but He says to keep working, there is more to teach me as I grow in Him. I can't go on without the "Power of His Love" sustaining me. Just a note about the needs for this walk. Jesus needs you to work and there are several openings on the teams. Call or email Wayne or me, pray and prepare to sponsor Pilgrims. God will use us all.

The theme for Women's Walk #60 is JOY, and there is JOY in the air. At this point the Women's Walk has a full team. Nancy and I are very excited and ready to go. God has been very faithful in putting together our teams. Even when something has come up and folks have had to drop out for some reason, another person has been there waiting to serve. We are thrilled about the number of first time workers. We welcome them and know they have been blessed to be a blessing. Our prayer now is for more pilgrims. It is good stewardship of our time and dollars to have a full Inn. If you have been praying about someone going on the walk ask them now. If God's timing is right it is not too late. March 19th is the deadline. Call Larry Allen (our Event Registrar) 503-252-6871 or allenl@pacifier.com and let him know an application is coming in the mail.
Prayerfully and Joyfully Yours,Genne Sherman and Nancy Rice 503-472-6404 4dgsherman@onlinemac.com
The next Girls Chrysalis flight will be August 18 -21. The theme, "More Like You," speaks of a call to discipleship and learning to live our lives more Like Jesus. Spots are still available in the Cocoon for several youth speakers and table leaders, as well as in the background on the Agaperations Team. As a reminder, husbands and wives can work together in the background. Most importantly, if you know of a young woman to whom you'd like to give the gift of a closer walk with the Lord, please pray about sponsoring her as a Caterpillar. What better way to arm our daughters and their friends with God's strength and protection as they end their summer and prepare to head back to all the challenges of the school year? Your prayers for God to direct all aspects of the Flight and to prepare the hearts of the Caterpillars and workers are greatly appreciated.
In Christ, Jane Mulholland, Lay Director 503-463-8251 jmulholl@wvi.com

Chrysalis News and Information !
What?
Chrysalis is a weekend of spiritual renewal and discovery for youth wishing to develop a
deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian.
We need you to sponsor caterpillars and we need you to help us serve our Lord and our
youth by working the flights.
“If I could only use one word to describe my Chrysalis experience, it would be the word amazing. Chrysalis helped put the passion and fire for God back in my heart. I met the most incredible bunch of girls and had so much fun getting to know each one of them. It is an awe -inspiring experience that will stay with you forever--it definitely did for me.” Rachel, Chrysalis #17
"I went into my Chrysalis weekend expecting to make friends and have fun (which I did, by the way). However, my casual weekend of fun, turned into a life-changing encounter with an amazing God and His amazing love. As I went through the three-day process of dying, rising, and flying with Christ, I felt like I did become a new creation and truly experienced, in a million different ways, God's unfathomable, boundless love for me. I have been a Christian most of my life, and I know a lot about what God is about, but until Chrysalis, I really didn't know who He was. Chrysalis gave me a new view of my relationship with God, making me recognize that He is constantly seeking for me, and leaving me longing to seek Him." ttyl, Grace
